37SEATSEAT TAKES TWO AT WHAT CAR? AWARDS 2021The SEAT Leon 1.5 TSI 130PS FR has been named Family Car of the Year in the 2021 What Car? Awards.
  • SEAT Leon 1.5 TSI 130PS FR adds Family Car of the Year to trophy cabinet
  • The brand also scoops podium place in the vital Safety Award category
  • New Leon adds first award of 2021 after receiving acclaim in 2020
  • New Leon awarded a five star rating by What Car?

Milton Keynes, 14 January 2021: The SEAT Leon 1.5 TSI 130PS FR has been named Family Car of the Year in the 2021 What Car? Awards.

The coveted trophy for one of the most hotly contested categories is the latest accolade for the New Leon which was launched in 2020. SEAT Leon also scooped third place in the Safety Award category, with What Car? assessors looking for five-star Euro NCAP ratings and high scores across all four categories: adult occupant, child occupant, vulnerable road user and safety assist, as well as standard-fit crash avoidance and driver assistance systems.

This accolade follows the success of being awarded a rare five-star rating by What Car? in 2020.

The awards signal the very best cars to buy according to What Car? which formally revealed its picks during a week-long, entirely digital 2021 awards event taking place this week between 11–14 January.

Jim Holder, What Car? editor, said: “As a family car, the Leon gets the basics right by offering a big boot and loads of space for passengers. But it also serves up a very welcome slice of fun, feels classy inside and costs less to buy and run than you’d think. It's a fantastic all-rounder.”

The New Leon has earned critical acclaim from across the industry – including the Best Buy Car of Europe at the AUTOBEST Awards – since its order book opened in the second half of 2020.

Richard Harrison, Managing Director of SEAT UK, said: “The New Leon has moved the bar higher again in the segment. This recognition, in what is a fiercely contested category, is testament to SEAT’s determination to offer high-quality, beautifully designed, practical and fun cars to drive, at an affordable price point. “It was also great to see the Leon gain recognition for its level of safety; as a relatively affordable proposition, it has the potential to make a significant impact on the overall safety of the UK’s car parc.” For more information on the New Leon and the rest of SEAT’s model range, visit: https://www.seat.co.uk/

Milton Keynes, 8 January 2021 – The CUPRA Formentor, the first vehicle developed specifically for the brand, has been nominated as one of the seven finalists in the prestigious European Car of the Year 2021 award.

This is the culmination of a short journey for the brand, which started in February 2018 when CUPRA was born. The product range has been expanded and transformed since then, including CUPRA Ateca, CUPRA Leon and CUPRA Formentor.

“The CUPRA Formentor’s nomination in this year’s Car of the Year award is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the brand’s entire team,” said Wayne Griffiths, President of CUPRA and SEAT. “The CUPRA Formentor, our first uniquely designed and developed model, is a real game changer: It brings a dimension to the market that hasn’t been seen before, helping make the brand more visible and desirable. The CUPRA Formentor brings together the benefits of a performance car with the qualities of an SUV. 17SEATSEAT teams up with CALM to add mental health ‘SOS’ to its cars A mental health ‘SOS’ has been added to SEAT cars after nine in 10* Britons say they ‘go for a drive’ to help their mental wellbeing.
  • Research shows that nearly nine in 10 people see driving as a way to improve their mental health
  • SEAT adds in-car mental health ‘SOS’ assistance feature
  • Drivers – and any family members – can quickly access support from charity partner Campaign Against Living Miserably via QR code
  • Nearly 59% of people admit to having to temporarily leave their home to de-stress
  • 60% say being able to drive their car during COVID restrictions has positively impacted their mental health
  • To start your journey to better mental health visit: https://www.thecalmzone.net/2020/11/help-with-whatever-journey-youre-on

  • Milton Keynes, 15 December 2020 –A mental health ‘SOS’ has been added to SEAT cars after nine in 10* Britons say they ‘go for a drive’ to help their mental wellbeing.

SEAT has partnered with suicide prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) to pilot its first-of-a-kind mental health ‘SOS’ feature – a QR code applied to the vanity mirror of new vehicles.

The QR code takes users to a specially-designed page on CALM’s website, with hints and tips to preserve your mental health, and a helpline number if the user needs further support. It can easily be removed by the user.

Research commissioned by the vehicle manufacturer showed that 59 per cent of UK adults have sought to improve their wellbeing by temporarily leaving their house, with nearly 90 per cent of people saying they go for a drive to stay positive or to support their mental health.

Richard Harrison. Managing Director of SEAT UK, said: “With our longstanding mental health partner, CALM, we wanted to play a small part in helping people to quickly access support when they need it. The new ’SOS’ feature should make it that little bit easier to have someone to talk to, especially because so many people see the car as a place of refuge. It is definitely a case of ‘being silent isn’t being strong’, so we encourage people to speak to their friends and family or seek professional advice.”

As the UK population continues to be impacted by various COVID restrictions, a further 60 per cent of respondents said that being able to drive their cars during the pandemic (within government guidelines) had positively impacted their mental health. More women (64 per cent) than men (54 per cent) have found solace in driving their cars during the pandemic.

While 90 per cent of respondents said they have driven their car to clear their head at some point during 2020, 46 per cent say they do so on a weekly basis.

Three quarters (76 per cent) of younger drivers (18-24) felt their car had been a positive influence on their mental health during the pandemic, the most of any age group, while this was the case for just half of over 55s.

Drivers in London (59 per cent) were most likely to get behind the wheel to support their mental health and stay positive on a weekly or daily basis, whereas drivers in Yorkshire and the Humber were least likely to do so (39 per cent).

SEAT hopes to make the service a permanent feature in its vehicles if the pilot is successful.

Simon Gunning, CEO at CALM, commented: “From CALM’s helpline number to expert advice on how to have a conversation with someone you’re worried about, CALM and SEAT have teamed up to put people in the driving seat when it comes to helping themselves and others.

Life is full of twists and turns. Sometimes we stall. And sometimes we need time to put the brakes on and take some time for ourselves. But no matter what you're going through CALM's helpline and webchat is here to provide free, anonymous and confidential support, 365 days a year, 5pm until midnight.”

The partnership between CALM and SEAT was established two years ago, with previous collaborations including the ‘Grow a Pair (of ears)’ campaign, which encouraged everyone to talk and listen to their friends to help support better mental health.

15SEATSEAT Fleet passes AA Driving School test with new partnershipSEAT Fleet has partnered with the AA Driving School in an agreement that will see two of its most popular vehicles become available to the renowned brand’s instructors.
  • SEAT Fleet passes AA Driving School test with new partnership
  • User-chooser agreement will give instructors option to choose acclaimed Arona and Ibiza models
  • Vehicle quality and ‘ease of doing business’ helped SEAT secure partnership with the respected driving school brand

  • Milton Keynes, 15 December 2020 – SEAT Fleet has partnered with the AA Driving School in an agreement that will see two of its most popular vehicles become available to the renowned brand’s instructors.

The award-winning Arona compact SUV and Ibiza hatchback, ideal for new or experienced drivers, will become available to AA Driving School instructors.

As well as their impeccable safety credentials and dynamic driving characteristics, each model boasts outstanding total cost of ownership (TCO) figures, making them ideal options for any instructor.

The deal between the two brands, will ensure its instructors have the option to buy a highly desirable SEAT of their choosing: the stylish, nimble yet practical Ibiza FR 1.0 TSI 95 PS or the even more spacious Arona SE Technology 1.0 TSI 95 PS, which also offers an intuitive driving dynamics.

The AA Driving School cited SEAT’s Fleet Manufacturers of the Year accolades and the outstanding quality of its line-up of vehicles as key to the deal. Its ‘easymove’ approach, making it much simpler for fleet drivers to select and specify their vehicle, was also a factor in the decision-making process.

SEAT UK Head of Fleet, Craig Cavanagh, commented: “The AA Driving School is responsible for training and developing the skills of thousands of new drivers every year. It is a vital job, and working closely with the AA, we can see why so many drivers put their trust in the brand.

“Learning to drive is such a formative part of your life; everybody remembers their first car or the car they learned in, and I’m delighted that due to this agreement, many more drivers will be able to say that the first car they drove was a SEAT. Our vehicles will stick in the memory; they are incredibly easy – not to mention fun – to drive, and present a compelling financial proposition, too.”

Sarah Rees, AA Driving School managing director, said: “We are pleased to be able to expand our fleet by partnering with SEAT to bring more choice and flexibility for our instructors.

“The new models are stylish and easy to drive and we think that they will be a popular choice with pupils too.”

With SEAT’s easymove approach, fleet customers need only choose the trim level, engine and colour on the online configurator – each has its own unique equipment to make it stand out and each comes with metallic paint as standard, making it simpler for fleet managers and user choosers to pick the perfect car for their needs.

16SEATNew SEAT Leon takes top prize at AUTOBEST 2021 The new SEAT Leon has been voted “AUTOBEST 2021”, the European accolade for the “Best Buy Car of Europe 2021”.
  • AUTOBEST, represented across 31 European countries, selected the new SEAT Leon as the “Best Buy Car of Europe 2021”
  • The new SEAT Leon’s mix of dynamics, efficiency, advanced safety and connectivity ensured win
  • Second AUTOBEST win for SEAT following Ateca taking the top honour in 2017

  • Milton Keynes, 15 December 2020 –The new SEAT Leon has been voted “AUTOBEST 2021”, the European accolade for the “Best Buy Car of Europe 2021”.

The AUTOBEST jury, made up of a panel of 31 respected automotive journalists from across Europe, voted Leon’s blend of driving dynamics, availability of powertrains including plug-in hybrid (e-HYBRID), and advanced connectivity, as the best to enter the market this year.

The advances to the new Leon in terms of safety, including a new centre airbag, resulted in a maximum five star rating from Euro NCAP under its new, more rigorous testing standards.

This is the second time in SEAT’s 70-year history that the company has taken the top honour, following Ateca’s win in 2017. This continued success highlights the company’s dedication to developing vehicles that go beyond the ordinary and offer something truly exceptional in the market.

“We are proud that our new SEAT Leon was elected “AUTOBEST 2021”, the best possible recognition for the team that was involved in the launch of the best Leon ever. A car designed, developed and produced in Barcelona, this award gives us renewed strength to look confidently into the future. The SEAT Leon has proven generation after generation that it’s an important pillar of the segment, and the award from the AUTOBEST judges reinforces the significance the Leon has in the market,” said Wayne Griffiths, President of SEAT and CUPRA. “It has brought the segment to a whole new level, mixing impressive design with technological advances to create a vehicle that provides everything customers need.”

The SEAT Leon has a strong track record since its introduction in 1998, selling 2.3 million vehicles worldwide and each generation being more popular than the last.

The Leon’s success was built on a £1 billion investment to help raise its standards of connectivity, efficiency and safety, but also to prepare the production facility for building the new model, available as both purely combustion engine and plug-in hybrid variant (e-HYBRID).

The AUTOBEST Award is among the most prestigious in Europe and has run consecutively since its inception in 2001.

  • SEAT Leon lights tested for 800 hours in one of the darkest places in Europe
  • Lighting team spent 800 hours in the dark testing the headlights and taillights
  • Full LED technology opens up new possibilities for engineers in safety, comfort and design
  • Interior ambient lighting incorporates innovative safety features

Milton Keynes, 10 December 2020 – SEAT engineers worked for approximately 2,500 hours on the lighting design on the new Leon and performed tests for over 800 hours in some of the darkest corners of the world.

The Dark Sky Algueva Reserve in Portugal, one of the darkest places in Europe and more often used by astronomers to observe nebulae and constellations, was one of the main testing grounds for the latest LED lighting technology featured in the new Leon.

“Here we have once again verified that the lighting we have designed for the fourth generation adapts perfectly to the road thanks to the range and width of the headlight beams and the contrast and definition of the rear lights” explains Carlos Elvira, head of Lighting and Signalling Development at SEAT.

Full LED technology has opened up new possibilities for engineers, both in terms of design as well as safety and comfort. “It enables us to have much more light on a much smaller surface area and thus to work with it much more efficiently” says Magnolia Paredes, head of Electronic Lighting Development at SEAT.

The team of engineers worked for approximately 2,500 hours on the design of the fourth generation SEAT Leon light assemblies.

This was followed by a further 800 hours of testing in darkness, either in the optical tunnel, which recreates night-time driving conditions, or on roads in the darkest corners of the world. “For us, testing in extreme climates is essential; in hot areas to test the operation of the electronics and in the cold to confirm the distribution of light on accumulations of ice” says Carlos.

In addition to its power and greater flexibility in where, how and when to direct the light beam, LED light stands-out for being much whiter than previous lighting technologies, with a colour temperature of 5,000 Kelvin. “This makes it possible to better identify the shape and colour of objects you encounter on the road at night, even in areas as dark as Alqueva, and this enables you to anticipate any circumstances that may arise” says Magnolia.

One of the keys to improving safety at the wheel is the quick reaction of LED lighting technology. An LED diode responds 150 milliseconds faster than an incandescent bulb. At 75 mph, this means the driver behind will see your brake light illuminate five metres earlier.

The wraparound arc of the interior ambient lighting is one of the greatest innovations that LED technology represents. “It was a great challenge for our programmers to obtain the maximum functional result” says Carlos. Not only is the ambient lighting colour customisable but it also fulfils an important safety function, alerting drivers to an improperly closed door or another car approaching from behind as you prepare to exit.

Additional safety features will be added by the end of the year. “The light intensity will increase as you accelerate to make you more speed conscious and if you are travelling with children and activate the safety locks on the rear doors they will light up in red if they try to open them” says Carlos.

13SEATNew SEAT Leon e-HYBRID expected to be fleet favourite with ultra-low BiK and TCONew SEAT Leon e-HYBRID expected to be fleet favourite with ultra-low BiK and TCO
  • Benefit in Kind rating for new Leon e-HYBRID confirmed to start from six per cent
  • Electric-only range of 40 miles means FR and XCELLENCE trims qualify for ultra-low BiK
  • Leon e-HYBRID benefits from super competitive TCO of just 30.0 pence per mile
  • Low P11D price from £30,915 (FR spec) and £32,905 (XCELLENCE)

Milton Keynes, 10 December 2020 – The SEAT Leon e-HYBRID, a plug-in hybrid which recently opened for order, has been confirmed to benefit from a Benefit in Kind (BiK) rating of just six per cent and ultra-competitive total cost of ownership.

The ultra-low BiK rating, applicable to plug-in hybrids with an electric-only range of at least 40 miles, is available with Leon e-HYBRID FR and XCELLENCE.

It is anticipated that this low BiK rating will prove attractive for fleet and company car buyers alike, giving the Leon a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of just 30.0p per mile and a strong residual value of 40 per cent after 3 years and 60,000 miles.

The P11D value for Leon e-HYBRID starts from £30,915 (P11D) for the FR trim which benefits from FR styling, digital cockpit, full-link smart phone integration, connected car technology, wireless phone charging, three zone climate control and Park Assist.

Leon e-HYBRID XCELLENCE has a P11D value of £32,905 and adds a host of luxury features such as Microsuede upholstery, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, rear view camera, Advanced keyless entry and start, and Lane Assist.

The e-HYBRID drivetrain combines a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with an electric motor and six-speed DSG transmission, resulting in a total power output of 204PS and a 0-62mph time of 7.5 seconds.

Both Leon e-HYBRID FR and XCELLENCE produce CO2 emissions of 27g/km and a combined WLTP fuel consumption figure of 217.3-235.4mpg.

Power is supplied to the electric motor via a 13kWh lithium-ion battery back which is recharged via a 3.6kW AC inlet. This enables Leon e-HYBRID to be fully charged from 0% in less than 3.5 hours.

The new Leon e-HYBRID is the first of a number of new plug-in hybrid vehicles from both the SEAT and CUPRA brands as part of an electrification offensive. The CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID and CUPRA Formentor e-HYBRID will arrive in the UK in the first quarter of 2021, followed by the SEAT Tarraco e-HYBRID in the second half of the year.

The all-new Leon is designed, developed and built at SEAT’s facilities in Martorell, Barcelona.
